Myths About Silver Brazing Alloys

Silver brazing alloys are highly preferable for brazing projects for several reasons. Silver is versatile, strong, and relatively inexpensive. Therefore, the silver alloy brazing products can work well for a lot of different projects. Unfortunately, there are a lot of myths about these brazing alloys. Take a look at a few of the most common and the facts you should know.

Myth: Silver brazing does not create as strong a bond as welding.

A huge misconception about brazing, in general, is that it is not as good for creating bonds as welding. However, that is not the case. When done properly with the best equipment, brazing, even with silver alloy rods, can create a tight, strong weld that is going to hold up well to pressure. Of course, there are going to be some types of brazing that will be stronger than others because of the metal being joined during the application and not necessarily due to the rod itself.

Myth: You can't apply silver brazing to non-ferrous metals.

One of the things that make silver brazing products so popular is the fact that the silver will bind well to both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Since silver in itself is non-ferrous, it can be used without an issue, but many people assume that non-ferrous brazing only works for ferrous metals. That is not always the case and is definitely not the case with silver.

Myth: Silver brazing rods don't really have much silver in them.

On the contrary, silver brazing rods have a substantial amount of silver in them. Yes, the rods can have a combination of other metal alloys that serve various purposes, but the majority of the rod will be silver. You should see the silver content listed as a percentage on the product when you are shopping for rods. If you are using the rods for making jewelry or for brazing something that requires a higher concentration of real silver, simply check out the listed percentage to make sure it coincides with what you need.

Myth: You can only find silver brazing materials in rod form.

While silver brazing rods may be the most commonly sought after product, it is not the only form. You can also find silver alloys for brazing in strips and wire. Therefore, you should have no problem finding the silver brazing alloy products that will work out best for your planned project or the type of equipment you are using.
